The teaching of music, especially composition, is the liberation of the student's personal creativity within the disciplines of the art. The latter implies mastery of the building materials of music: harmonic structure and flow, rhythmic flexibility and imagination, and also the creation of memorable melodic lines. The rest, although also important, is subsidiary. The liberation of personal creativity means the discovery of a creative voice through the refinement of the composer's individual preferences. This has nothing to do with vogue or fashion and everything to do with the perfecting of the individual's choices.
